“Can’t you go any faster?” Pablo asked from the back seat of Luke’s Volvo.

“I don’t know. I’ve never raced this thing. This car is older than Delilah.”

“It’s true,” Delilah agreed.

“We have GOT to go see my nephew,” Pablo said.

“Let’s worry about that after tonight.” Luke pushed the gas pedal down further. The speedometer edged toward ninety-five mph. A worrying shimmy vibrated the car. “I don’t think I can get it up much further and still get there…at least not in one piece.”

Luke hoped there weren’t any Johnny Law types out past their bedtime. He slowed the car enough to make the exit from I-84 to I-5 North and started to accelerate when Pablo yelled, “Brakes, NOW!” Luke jammed on the brakes, checked the rear-view mirror to make sure there wasn’t anyone behind him, and brought the car down to the speed limit.

“What’s up, Pablo?” Luke asked.

“There’s a cop on I-5. Just tuck in behind him, and we’ll see where it’s going.”

“Gotcha.”

Luke carefully merged onto the freeway behind the cop and stuck to the 50 mph speed limit. He was hoping the cop would get off at the Broadway exit, but no such luck. Luke was getting antsy.

“Hey, just calm it down there, Luke,” Delilah advised. “You’re getting a bit jittery, and we don’t need the cop pulling you over because he thinks you’re driving under the influence.”

Luke took several slow, deep breaths and collected himself; better slow than not at all. Irritatingly, the cop continued down I-5.

“Look, man. Just stick to the freeway. Fifty-five and steady to the Columbia Boulevard exit is still going to be faster than getting off the freeway and taking surface streets.”

“Yeah, you’re right.” Luke knew Pablo was but couldn’t help being frustrated with the delay. Luke’s patience was rewarded when the cop pulled onto the Going Street exit. As soon as he was halfway up, Luke depressed the gas pedal. Without further interference, they made it to the Columbia exit and slowed down to take the clover loop onto Columbia. The boulevard through the industrial part of North Portland was virtually abandoned this late at night.

Luke passed the Portsmouth Women’s Village and turned off Columbia, finding a parking spot near a park a safe distance away. They piled out of the car and grabbed their gear. Luke pulled a black vest from inside a bag tossed in the back of the Volvo.

“Sorry, I forgot about this in the rush to get up to Johnson Creek, Delilah. I hope this fits.” He handed her the heavy black vest.

“Bulletproof vest?”

“Stab vest. It’s made specifically for bladed weapons. It’s got some bullet rating, but don’t take that chance. If you see a gun, duck.” Delilah shucked her coat and put on the vest.

“A bit tight in the chest,” she grunted as she worked to get the zipper all the way up.

“Sorry; it was the best I could do on short notice. We might have to look into getting you a custom fit.”

“Ya think?”

“Don’t I get a fancy vest?” Pablo pouted.
