âCanât you go any faster?â Pablo asked from the back seat of Lukeâs Volvo.
âI donât know. Iâve never raced this thing. This car is older than Delilah.â
âItâs true,â Delilah agreed.
âWe have GOT to go see my nephew,â Pablo said.
âLetâs worry about that after tonight.â Luke pushed the gas pedal down further. The speedometer edged toward ninety-five mph. A worrying shimmy vibrated the car. âI donât think I can get it up much further and still get thereâ¦at least not in one piece.â
Luke hoped there werenât any Johnny Law types out past their bedtime. He slowed the car enough to make the exit from I-84 to I-5 North and started to accelerate when Pablo yelled, âBrakes, NOW!â Luke jammed on the brakes, checked the rear-view mirror to make sure there wasnât anyone behind him, and brought the car down to the speed limit.
âWhatâs up, Pablo?â Luke asked.
âThereâs a cop on I-5. Just tuck in behind him, and weâll see where itâs going.â
âGotcha.â
Luke carefully merged onto the freeway behind the cop and stuck to the 50 mph speed limit. He was hoping the cop would get off at the Broadway exit, but no such luck. Luke was getting antsy.
âHey, just calm it down there, Luke,â Delilah advised. âYouâre getting a bit jittery, and we donât need the cop pulling you over because he thinks youâre driving under the influence.â
Luke took several slow, deep breaths and collected himself; better slow than not at all. Irritatingly, the cop continued down I-5.
âLook, man. Just stick to the freeway. Fifty-five and steady to the Columbia Boulevard exit is still going to be faster than getting off the freeway and taking surface streets.â
âYeah, youâre right.â Luke knew Pablo was but couldnât help being frustrated with the delay. Lukeâs patience was rewarded when the cop pulled onto the Going Street exit. As soon as he was halfway up, Luke depressed the gas pedal. Without further interference, they made it to the Columbia exit and slowed down to take the clover loop onto Columbia. The boulevard through the industrial part of North Portland was virtually abandoned this late at night.
Luke passed the Portsmouth Womenâs Village and turned off Columbia, finding a parking spot near a park a safe distance away. They piled out of the car and grabbed their gear. Luke pulled a black vest from inside a bag tossed in the back of the Volvo.
âSorry, I forgot about this in the rush to get up to Johnson Creek, Delilah. I hope this fits.â He handed her the heavy black vest.
âBulletproof vest?â
âStab vest. Itâs made specifically for bladed weapons. Itâs got some bullet rating, but donât take that chance. If you see a gun, duck.â Delilah shucked her coat and put on the vest.
âA bit tight in the chest,â she grunted as she worked to get the zipper all the way up.
âSorry; it was the best I could do on short notice. We might have to look into getting you a custom fit.â
âYa think?â
âDonât I get a fancy vest?â Pablo pouted.
